About the Bands

Eden Prairie Community Band

The Eden Prairie Community Band is an adult community band, initiated in 1973. Over the course of that time, the band has taken several trips overseas, played numerous indoor and outdoor concerts, provided pit orchestras for musicals, and even marched in parades. Its annual “Share the Warmth” concert in December brings in coats, hats, mittens, and food for People Reaching Out to People, PROP.

The band has two components, a Concert Band and the Jazz on the Prairie Big Band. The band’s small subsets include the Prairie Ramblers, the Dixieland ensemble, and woodwind and brass ensembles. The band is open to adult musicians and all instrumentalists are welcome.

For more information on the Community Band and the summer concert venue visit epcommunityband.com or jazzontheprairie.com.

Calhoun Isles Community Band

CICB is a traditional concert band with a repertoire that includes a wide variety of original band compositions, classical transcriptions, jazz arrangements, Broadway and movie medleys, and marches. For over 30 years, the band has been making beautiful music in Uptown Minneapolis. Currently the band has grown to over 80 members covering all instrumentation areas. The Calhoun Isles Community Band is led by Principal Conductor Tedd Gullickson. CICB members come from all walks of life, from high school students to Senior Citizens all united in their love to play. Find out more at www.calhounislesband.org

Fridley City Band

The Fridley City Band formed in 1961 when some band parents got together to play for a high school band event. They had so much fun they invited their friends and we have been playing music ever since. We are a year round band playing concerts at senior retirement complexes, parks in Faribault, Zumbrota, St Paul, and Fridley. We have an annual pops concert with the NE Orchestra which is always a highlight of the year. We have an off shoot group we call the Old Time Band or German band which is particularly busy in October. We rehearse weekly at the Fridley Middle School on Monday evenings from 7:15–8:45. We welcome all players who want to come have a good time making music together. We are preparing for our return to the Raspberry Festival this summer.

Shoreview Northern Lights Variety Band

The Shoreview Northern Lights Variety Band, founded in 1994, provides an opportunity for musicians over the age of 16 to gather to have fun making music together, develop musical talents, promote musical and social exchange, and perform at community events. Mr. Merle Danielson is the Musical Director. Dr. Michael Scott is the Resident Guest Conductor. The band has a membership of over 70 volunteer musicians. Annually, the band presents its holiday and spring concerts in Benson Great Hall on the campus of Bethel University in Arden Hills. Every summer the band performs at popular concert venues throughout the Twin Cities. SNLVB is incorporated as a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization and is governed by an elected Board of Directors. The band welcomes new Facebook fans! Find out more about the band at www.snlvb.com

Hopkins Westwind Concert Band

The Hopkins Westwind Concert Band (HWCB) was organized in 1983 by Minnetonka resident R. G. Wolf to provide a place in the western suburbs for adult musicians to play. The band has grown steadily from 13 to more than 75 musicians on its active roster. Serving as “Goodwill Ambassadors,” the HWCB performs throughout the area in parks, senior centers, churches, festivals, and concert halls. The HWCB was honored to be selected to perform the opening day concert at the Hopkins Center for the Arts in November 1997.

History

The Hopkins Westwind Concert Band has hosted the “Raspberry Festival of Bands” for 30 years. This event showcases five community bands in the metro area. For the first few years, the event was held at Maetzold Field after the Parade on the last Sunday of the Festival. For the next 15 years, it was moved to a Showmobile at the corner of Twelfth Ave. and Mainstreet and was included as part of Saturday’s “Family Day.” Following the construction of the band shell in Downtown Park, the Raspberry Festival of Bands has been presented at that location. It historically has drawn crowds to the park and has become a destination for many folks.
